MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - In one day, two men, in separate cases, agreed to take guilty pleas that will send them to prison for the maximum sentence on child rape charges.

"The fact that two individuals agreed to take 25 years at 100 percent doesn't happen everyday," said Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich. "But when you can do that in a case that keeps a child from having to take the stand at 201 Poplar of course we're going to let that case be resolved in that way."

Prosecutors say Khamprason Keophila raped a 3-year-old. The assault was captured on video by a 5-year-old playing with his mother's old cell phone.

Prosecutors say Ronald Curry raped an 11-year-old and impregnated her.

Both cases were handled by the DA's special victim's unit, which prosecutes all rape cases and all cases in which a child has been physically or sexually abused.

General Amy Weirich says the special victim's unit has tried the most cases in her office in 2013.

"What was plead out yesterday in court was a very small sample of what they deal with on a daily basis. They do an amazing job," said Weirich.

Weirich says statistics once indicated one out four females would be sexually abused in her lifetime. The same stats predicted one out of six men would be assaulted. She says the number has dropped to about one in 10.

"It's a step in the right direction, but it's still far too many kids," she said. "A lot of times the defendant, the perpetrator, is a family member."
