MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Mesa police officers have one suspect in custody after a scuffle with an off-duty deputy working security in a Mesa shopping district.

A man suspected of shoplifting from a Walmart at the Mesa Riverview shopping center was confronted by the deputy just before 5 a.m. Thursday near Dobson Road and Rio Salado Parkway.

The suspect threw his bicycle at the deputy, got into a scuffle and ran away as the deputy tried to stop him with a stun gun.

The suspect ran, jumping over fences in a nearby neighborhood until he was subdued about 30 minutes later by Mesa officers using a Taser.

The deputy hurt a knee during the encounter.

A Mesa police spokesman said the suspect faces possible charges of shoplifting, aggravated assault on an officer and trespass. The suspect also has outstanding warrants, the spokesman said.

No other information was immediately available.
