Survey: Memphis women heaviest drinkers in America

(WMC-TV) - A survey, conducted by the health website ShareCare, found that Memphis women are the heaviest drinkers in America.

Sharecare recommends one drink each day for women will be good for their health, while men can drink two. But when your one glass of wine at dinner turns into an entire bottle, you could be putting your health at risk.

While the women in Memphis ranked number one on the list of heaviest drinkers, the Bluff City ranked eighth on the list of men who drink the least

According to the survey, Knoxville is on the top of the men's list.

Both cities are in the top 10 for strong social networks, and according to Sharecare, drinking tends to be a social activity.

"We use alcohol socially because it tends to break down inhibitions and makes it easier for people to open up and have a good time," said Keith Roach, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Sharecare. "The iconic, club-lined Beale Street in Memphis and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville add plenty of opportunities for residents to get their drink on."

The women in Salt Lake City and the men in Louisville follow Memphis and Knoxville, ranking number two on the list.
