Woman home for Christmas after life-saving jump off of icy overpass

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Pamela Byrd-Davis made a life-saving jump off of an overpass during an ice storm to avoid getting hit by a car. Now, she is on the long road to recovery -- and was home from the hospital in time for Christmas.

Pamela and two other women jumped about 30 feet off of the Walnut Grove Road-Humphreys Boulevard overpass on December 8.

Being able to walk across her living room could be the best Christmas gift Pamela gets all year.

"It was just a reaction really, it wasn't a decision," she said.

Just over two weeks ago, during the first ice storm of the season, Pamela was involved in a crash involving several vehicles on the Walnut Grove Road overpass.

She and three others got out of their cars to assess the situation. When they did, they saw another car headed right for them.

"It was a natural reaction to get away from something that was going to crush you," explained Pamela. "And the wall was right there and in my mind it was just the other side and I thought I had to step over it. And the next thing I knew, snow was falling on my face and I was laying there, I didn't know where I was, I was confused."

But Pamela knew enough to call a friend, who put enough pieces together to realize she was injured.

In the meantime, someone called 911.

"I remember a policeman, or somebody standing over me, telling me it was gonna be alright," she said.

She suffered an injured arm, cracked rib and vertebrate, and a broken tail bone.

"Even though my body is strong, my mind has been scared because that was a long fall and it hurt," added Pamela, who is grateful for the help for friends and family as she continues to recover. "I've been told that I'm going to have a 100 percent recovery, it's just going to take time.

It is time that only seems to be more precious as Pamela thinks about how much worse it could have been.

"I'm happy because I think it's a great gift to all of those that have really been helping me and caring for me around the clock," she said.

Of the two other women who jumped from the bridge, one was released from the hospital and the other remains there recovering from several injuries.
