MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Fire Department battled two fires early Thursday morning that damaged a duplex and a house.

The first call to firefighters came in just after midnight from the 1800 block of McMillan Street.

Paris Owens lives across the street and was the first person to call 911.

"We were just coming home from my mama's house and my nephew saw fireworks, or what he thought was fireworks," she said. "We get around the curb and the house is in flames."

Owens says no one has lived in the home recently because the owner is in the process of renovations.

"She just actually started re-finishing the house and getting it built up again and getting some remodeling done on the house," said Owens.

Investigators believe that faulty wiring may be to blame.

Just a couple of hours later, firefighters were on the scene of a second fire, this time, on the 1200 block of Florida Street.

This fire happened around 2:30 a.m. at a duplex. An 83-year-old man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the duplex fire is not yet known.
