CORDOVA, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South couple received an unexpected Christmas gift after they said they were ripped off by a contractor.

As soon as Action News 5's story aired on Christmas Eve, our reporter's phone started ringing off the hook with calls from complete strangers who wanted to help right a wrong.

Wayne Gilchrist lives in Cordova, and he is a Vietnam veteran.

Agent Orange led to diabetes and a double amputation. At least he and wife Loretta can rest a little easier now.

"I'm feeling much better knowing that we're going to get this work done," said Wayne.

The couple gave a contractor a $1,000 deposit for some window work, and he disappeared with their money after a shoddy caulk job and without completing the contract.

Titan Drywall & Construction owner Jason Smith was in the Gilchrist's backyard assessing the situation. He offered to do the necessary repairs free of charge.

"When I first saw it, man, I'll be honest with you ... It looks like my 9-year-old son was out here messing around with caulk," said Smith.

As a contractor, Smith says the original story made him angry.

"I've had a blessed year, blessed family, and everything. I just want to pay it forward. And who knows, somebody may see this and do something nice for somebody else," said Smith. "I know we can take care of this and make it right."

Loretta is grateful.

"Y'all don't know what that means to us to have somebody feel that strongly and have never ever met us," she said. "I couldn't believe it. Yeah, it was like they were our Christmas angel. They made our Christmas."

Work is scheduled to begin first thing Friday morning. Still no luck finding the original contractor, but Action News 5 is still trying.
