(WMC-TV) - A little girl's fight against the odds is educating the Mid-South about the importance of an organ donation.

Two-year-old Maci McCarrens was born with kidney and brain damage.

Her mother, Jima McCarrens, said Maci is visually impaired and that her kidneys work but they do not filter.

"Which means all if the bad stuff in her body stays there," said Jima.

Maci was on peritoneal dialysis for two years to allow her stomach to grow large enough for an adult kidney. She was on a transplant list for eight weeks and two days.

"I don't know how to describe the feeling when we got that call they possibly had a match for her," said Jima.

Jima and her husband Rick were relieved.

"It was wonderful 'cause dialysis is horrible," she said.

Maci was transplanted at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital on Dec 6.

Jima said everything looked good at first, but on Christmas Day Maci spiked a fever from a respiratory virus.

"Unfortunately they discovered that a blood clot had formed in the bloodline to the new kidney, and it was not salvageable," said Jima. "So we're back to square one."

Maci's improving from the virus and back on the donor list. Her mother believes there is a second chance for another kidney for her baby girl.

"I just cannot express the importance of organ donation," said Jami.

She has hope for a normal future for Maci.
