Memphis Grizzlies grant wish for 8-year-old fan

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – For a basketball player, getting drafted is the ultimate wish. You grow up looking up to the guys in the league, and when you're given a chance to step on the court with them it's the best feeling.

Just ask one Mid-South 8-year-old, whose wish was granted on Sunday by the Grizzlies.

Charvis Brewer wants to block Carmelo Anthony's shot.

It's just a part of his love for basketball and, of course, his love for the Memphis Grizzlies.

"He gets excited, very excited! He loves the Grizzlies, and I love to see him do that, because he can't do what other kids can do. And so when he's into basketball, I'm into basketball with him," said Charvis' mom, Colissa Brewer.

"I get to go to the game tomorrow!" an excited Charvis said.

Charvis has cerebral palsy, a disease that affects his muscles. It makes proper growth and movement difficult.

The Mid-South Make-A-Wish Foundation granted his wish on Sunday: to be drafted by the Grizzlies.

"So we need to work on our free-throws and 3-point shooting," said Head Coach Dave Joerger.

Right away, Charvis made it known who the man in practice is by making decisions and blowing the whistle he got from Z-Bo.

"I like this guy! You're a good coach!" said Mike Miller.

He met all of his teammates and even tried to change their roles in the offense.

Then it was time to watch and critique practice.

"He better hit this one. Shoot this one! Now guard each other in practice. Why they ain't guarding each other? Where the coach at? He ain't doing nothing, he's just standing right there," said Charvis.

"If they make a bad mistake, he'll call them out, you know. He'll tell 'em to get back and do right. Coach'll pull out the wrong person, he'll call him out and say, ‘No, you took the wrong one out, put the right one back in.'"

While an NBA career can be all too fleeting, for Charvis, the memories will last forever.

Charvis and his family will get to see the Grizzlies in action Monday night.

If you're going to be at the game, you're sure to see and hear Charvis cheering for his two favorite players: Mike Conley and Z-Bo.
