(WMC-TV) - A Memphis optometrist was sent to the hospital after two men reportedly attacked him in his home garage, according to police.

Dr. Burton Bodan, 85, told police he arrived at his East Memphis home from a liquor store and parked in his garage on a Thursday in early December. He was met by two middle-aged men when he stepped out of the car.

The men told Bodan to give them everything; he told them there was nothing to give. The two men beat him and took his wallet with several unknown credit cards and $300 in cash.

When police arrived after the incident, officials sent him to The MED in critical condition.

"He is now 86 years old, and he was defenseless," said Bodan's daughter, who wished to keep her identity concealed with the attackers still on the loose. "Immediately you start thinking about your own safety and security."

Dr. Bodan is a well-known optometrist in Memphis and has been for 60 years.

"I've been around a lot of horrible things, and I've never seen anything look any worse than that in my entire life," said Bodan's sister-in-law, who also wanted to remain anonymous.

Since the attack, Dr. Bodan has had to spend his birthday, his wife's birthday, and the couple's 61st wedding anniversary in the hospital. Two assailants remain on the loose, and his family is desperate to bring them to justice. The family knows someone out there has information.

"It may be insignificant. It may not be, but I just don't want to see this happen to someone else," said the daughter. "It's very important that we catch the people that did this because what they did was so horrific."

Former and current patients have showered the family with get-well cards while Dr. Bodan recovers, but the best gift would be closure in a case that continues to haunt the family.

If anyone has information, he or she is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
