MY TURN: Continuing to move Memphis, Shelby County forward

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - There's something about a prayer breakfast that seems to bring out the best in people. Our local leaders again this year participated in the annual prayer breakfast organized by Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery. And as in the past, optimism was in the air and pledges to be civil in the future were plentiful.

The title of this year's event was "Continuing to Move Memphis and Shelby County Forward." Some people might take issue with word "continuing," but let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt. There can be no denying that a lack of civility among our local leaders has contributed to gridlock on some issues of importance to our community. As 2014 now begins to unfold, we know that there are some tough issues facing us. Among them, what the City of Memphis must do about its unsustainable debt load, fueled by $700 million in city pensions and a health care liability of $1.2 billion. Wouldn't it be great if all that talk about being civil was more than just talk?

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
