TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Tipton County woman is dead after investigators say her husband shot her by accident.

Crime scene tape still surrounds the home of Laura and Chris Rains as deputies try to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to Laura's death.

Deputies say Laura, 26, was shot in the head by her 25-year-old husband around 6 p.m. Monday.

Chris Rains told investigators his wife was handing him a pistol when it went off.

"Love them to death, sweet people," said Codie Tramel, the couple's neighbor. "I've known Chris for years, since I was 12. Real shocker."

Deputies say Laura was still alive after the shooting, but died after being taken to The MED by helicopter.

"The family is being cooperative with us," said Chief Donna Turner, Tipton County Sheriff's Office. "We're waiting on the medical examiner's preliminary report."

Laura and Chris Rains had been married several years and had a little girl.

Neighbors believe the shooting was an accident. They say Chris would never do anything to harm his wife or little girl.

"He is a good guy, the type of person who'd give you the shirt off his back," said Tramel. "He doesn't have the heart to do anything."

Chris Rains did not comment Tuesday morning as he showed up at the house to gather his personal belongings.

Deputies say regardless of whether it was an accident or not, this incident serves as a reminder to everyone who keeps a gun in the house.

"A loaded weapon, even it's just adults and there's no children, be extremely careful," said Chief Turner.

At this point, no charges have been filed in this case.
