MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Students in Shelby County enjoyed another unexpected day of Christmas vacation on Tuesday, but they will be back to class Wednesday, according to SCS.

Because of extremely cold temperatures, the Shelby County School system closed school Tuesday.

Not everyone was thrilled though. Teachers and employees still had to report to work.

"We felt that we would be putting possibly some of students in danger," said Emily Yellin, Shelby County Schools. "And we're well aware that not all of the children in our school system have adequate winter weather gear because we live in Memphis, we don't live in Minnesota."

The district says because most teachers drive to school, they were still required to report to work, though, many of them were unhappy about it.

"We had never thought that we would have had to come to work as teachers on the day when children were absent. That has not happened before," said Keith Williams, Memphis Education Association.

The kids will join the teachers again on Wednesday.
