RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond Police officer has been arrested following a State Police investigation.

Officer Keri Buyalos, 30, faces a charge of using a computer for invasion of privacy, a class 6 felony, State Police confirmed.

The offense occurred on December 11, but she was arrested Tuesday and released on her own recognizance, according to online court records.

State Police say they began their investigation after receiving a complaint and found Buyalos used the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) to disseminate information for non-criminal investigation purposes. The computer network is used by law enforcement to communicate between agencies and lookup citizen information.

"Virginia law is very clear that if a police officer doesn't have authorization to provide that information to a third party, and they do that anyway, it's a class six felony," said NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin. "It's particularly serious for any police officer because conviction of a felony would be the end of their career."

We went to Buyalos' home in Dinwiddie to get her side of the story but she wasn't home and her sister asked us to leave the property.

Richmond Police say Buyalos is now on administrative leave. She joined the Richmond Police Department's in 2009 and works in the third precinct. She will be in court January 24.
