Charlotte in running to host the Republican National Convention

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

In 2012, President Obama accepted his nomination for President at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Could it could be the Republicans turn?

The GOP has asked 27cities to submit a bid to host the next Republican National Convention, and Charlotte is once again one of the potential sites.

Without question, the 2012 Democratic National Convention created a series of defining moments for the City of Charlotte.

Another presidential election comes in less than three years from now, and there's talk that the Queen City's skyline may be primed for maximum exposure.

Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is among those exploring the possibilities.

"The thing that I plan to do as mayor is to meet with city officials and others to discuss any opportunity in having the RNC here," Cannon told WBTV.

Charlotte has been on the radar of the RNC for years.

Last year, decision makers with the GOP spent several days brought some of its best known faces to town for a post presidential election meeting.

Business operators uptown say they welcome the challenge and the business.

Jim Noble is the driving force behind uptown's King's Kitchen, and says the 2012 convention improved his bottom line.

"We had some marvelous private parties, here and Roosters uptown," he said." I would say to the city of Charlotte and people, go for it. It's great and you become very bi-partisan. You see a very high volume from a very diverse group of people who you've never met before."

Sudeep Vyas handles much of the family business at Richa Graphics.

He recalls that during the DNC convention, the calls came frequently.

"They need it last minute. They need it right away, and you can justify charging a little bit more for it," Vyas told WBTV.

Based on the success of the DNC, Mayor Cannon says Charlotte has a track record.

"This is not our first time at the rodeo," the mayor said. "We understand how big conventions work. We can pull those off. So anytime we decide to do something like this. We go in pretty confidently."

"Charlotte was an enormously successful host of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, raising the Queen City's profile and generating almost $164 million in economic impact," commented Congressman Robert Pittenger.

"Hosting the 2016 Republican National Convention would be another big win for our community and economy, and I will work with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and other national Republican leaders to help them understand the major benefits of hosting the convention in Charlotte."
