Businesses in jeopardy at Victory Crossings

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Businesses at Victory Crossings Shopping Center may have to close up shop after new plans to redesign the center eliminates a building for a new traffic entrance.

The owner of Baldino's Giant Subs said the restaurant has been here since 1989 and he was shocked when he first learned from WTOC that his unit along with four others is going to be demolished.

Mahesh Patel says he has owned this building for four years; he signed a 15 year lease and has spent nearly $150,000 in renovations on his business.

Patel is frustrated because the developer has said nothing about the new plans for Victory Crossings, let alone that his specific unit it scheduled to be torn down and replaced with a new traffic entrance.

"I tried to call, I've emailed, but they haven't emailed me back and they haven't called me back," said Patel.

The developers told me they don't have any plans to relocate the businesses in this building, but that's not what they told city council members.

"I go to Baldino's all the time," said Alderman Mary Osborne. "I told the owner of the property, you can move the Baldino's but it needs to be there and I was told it would still be there."

Other loyal customers are also hoping Baldino's sticks around.

"I'm not going to stand in the way of progress but I would love to see Baldino's stay in the area," said customer David Gray.

According to the developers, the business that will not be affected are the IHOP and the Verizon Wireless store; they will remain where they are.

The owner of Baldino's says if the developers are not going to relocate them, he wants to be bought out.
