MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Police charged a man, who has a reported mental disorder, with attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed.

Two officers were involved in an altercation with the suspect, 44-year-old Glen Jones, Monday night. MPD's Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) was also on the scene at 1531 McLemore Avenue, which is in South Memphis.

A CIT officer was armed with a SL-6 weapon that shoots rubber bullets. Jones was ordered to disarm himself but ran back into the residence. When Jones came out of the home he allegedly stabbed the officer, which is when a .40 caliber pistol was used

"[Rubber bullets are] our attempt to save lives, but even when well prepared, things have a tendency to go wrong," said Director Toney Armstrong in front of The MED. "Unfortunately we had an individual act out and caused our officers to respond in a way that put his life in danger."

Crews sent both the unidentified, injured officer and Jones to The MED. The officer, who was stabbed in the arm, is in stable condition. He has since been released. Jones' condition is critical.

Jones' family members stood across the street from their house watching as police investigated.

Witnesses say Jones started fighting his father and other family members. Up and down East McLemore Avenue Monday night neighbors could hear the screams coming from the family's home.

There is now a bullet hole in the living room wall with an exit through the dining room wall.

"I don't know what the outcome [is] gonna be, but I just pray to the good Lord that he'll be alive," said the father, Earl Jones. "This whole act about a guy walking up on a police with a knife in his hand, you know, who believes that ... This needs to be checked into, but see don't nobody wanna come forward and check into it

Earl Jones says the family has received help for his son's mental illness in the past, but his stay at any facility has been temporary. Keeping Glen on the proper medication is difficult. Earl says he believes officers need constant training on dealing with these situations.

"I'm praying and hoping that I can keep myself together, my mindset will be straight where I don't have no anger or nothing toward nobody," he said.

Armstrong said Memphis' CIT program is a model for the nation.

"This is a dangerous job. This [incident] is a constant reminder ... Certainly this is not one of the ways we wanted to start our year," said Armstrong. "I've spent far too much time standing in the hallways of this MED."

When Jones recovers, police say he will be taken to 201 Poplar. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder.
