ARLINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A former Arlington High School employee is accused of embezzling nearly $150,000 from the school over the course of two years.

Toni Cox, 48, the former financial secretary at Arlington High School, is charged with theft of property over $60,000. She is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail without bond.

According to the Shelby County District Attorney General's Office, Cox altered collection records and pocketed funds from fees turned in for virtually every club, organization, and team from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2010. Prosecutors say the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury Office performed an audit that determined Cox stole $142,307 during the course of her scheme.

A grand jury handed down a criminal indictment on December 19, 2013. Authorities picked her up Tuesday afternoon and she was booked into jail at 8:10 p.m.

Her initial court date has not yet been set.

She is no longer employed at Arlington High School. Shelby County Schools released the following statement:

"This employee resigned in May 2010. Since then, the administration of Arlington High School has instituted multiple measures to safeguard the school from any such situations."

"Nothing surprises me anymore with regards to fraud," said fraud expert Andy Wilson.

Wilson was not involved in this investigation, but he describes Cox's scheme as a textbook case of "skimming."

"All that money would present an opportunity to a dishonest person," he said. "It's other people's money and this lady abused her responsibility at the school and quite frankly took advantage of her opportunity."
