'Bomb scare' started with man saying Pres. Obama sent an airplane for him

(WMC-TV) - A Millington intersection was closed for a period of time Wednesday afternoon as police responded to a bomb scare near the airport.

Police were called about a suspicious man in a pickup truck parked at the airport gate. They became alarmed when he began to explain what he was doing there.

"They spoke to the gentleman at which point he stated he was waiting on a plan coming to pick him up that President Obama was sending for him," said Millington Police Chief Rita Stanback.

A Millington police bomb-sniffing K-9 alerted on the man's suitcase, prompting a call out to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office bomb squad.

Technicians searched the suitcase and found nothing dangerous. It was a relief for Millington police, who were originally unsure of what they could be dealing with.

"He was talking about the president. He was trying to get on an airplane and it could've been a bomb and we were lucky that it wasn't," said Stanback.

No charges were filed in the incident. The driver was taken to 201 Poplar on an outstanding warrant from juvenile court regarding some child support issues.

The dog hit on the man's suitcase because he used it in the past to carry ammunition to the shooting range, according to police.
