MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An 8-year-old student was reportedly caught with a knife at school.

Memphis police responded to A.B. Hill Elementary School Wednesday afternoon.

In a letter written to parents, Principal James Shaw said a classmate alerted a staff member that the 8-year-old had a knife. It was taken away immediately and Shelby County Schools security and MPD were called.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

According to Shaw, the student will be "disciplined in accordance with the law and board policy" because weapons of any kind are prohibited on the school's campus.

Here is the letter that was sent home to parents:

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I would like to inform you of an incident that occurred at A.B. Hill Elementary School today.

This afternoon, staff received a tip from a student that a classmate was in possession of a knife. Staff immediately took possession of the weapon. Shelby County Schools Security and the Memphis Police Department were contacted and responded immediately.

There was no incident involving the knife and no students or staff were injured. Weapons of any kind are prohibited on campus. The student will be disciplined in accordance with the law and board policy.

We want to commend the student who came forward with information about a knife on our campus. Parents, please be reminded that we encourage students to always report safety concerns to our staff. We also need your support to help ensure that A.B. Hill Elementary remains a safe learning environment. You can assist us by checking your child's belongings each morning to see that inappropriate items are not brought to school. Additionally, we will continue reinforcing all messages around student safety in our school.

Should you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the school.

We appreciate your continued support of A.B. Hill Elementary.

This is the second day in a row that police have been called to A.B. Hill Elementary.

On Tuesday, a 5-year-old girl was found locked in a closet. An investigation into that incident is underway.
