Suspect arrested in murder of ASU football player

(WMC-TV) - Police arrested a man in connection to the murders of an Arkansas State University football player and his stepfather.

Jackson police charged Derrick Wade, 22, in the Wednesday night murders of 21-year-old Markel Owens, 36-year-old Johnny Shivers, and the attempted murder of 16-year-old Chermaine Owens in a home invasion robbery in Jackson, Tenn.

Wade is in custody at the Madison County Jail.

According to the Jackson Police Department, Owens was shot and killed Wednesday night at his home.

Investigators learned that Shivers and his 16-year-old son were arriving home when they were rushed by two masked men and forced inside the apartment. The suspects were armed with handguns and demanded money.

Shivers and Markel Owners were shot trying fight off the men.

Police believe Shivers was specifically targeted because a large amount of marijuana was found inside the apartment. Investigators believe the robbers had prior knowledge of the drugs, cash, or both that was inside the apartment.

Chermaine was treated at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

During the ongoing investigation, police learned that one of the armed intruders was shot in the thigh during the struggle and needed medical attention. The investigation has determined that Wade was the injured man.

Investigators have developed a person of interest as the second gunman and are in search of him. Call Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477 with information.
