(WMC-TV) - Midtown neighbors in Central Gardens and Annesdale Park united Friday to help their newspaper carrier who has served them for nearly half a century.

Jeff Cain was beaming standing alongside his customer Denise Bollheimer at Harbert Avenue. He has been throwing the Commercial Appeal in the neighborhood since 1965.

Cain is known for helping his clients anyway he can, even serving doggie biscuits to canines as early risers take their pets for morning walks.

Last year, neighbors noticed Jeff's old F-150 truck was giving out. So they found a 1999 Ford Explorer for sale, raised the money to buy it, put a new engine in it along with other repairs, and delivered it to the hearing-impaired deliveryman.

"Always want to help them, do something for them. I never thought this [was going to happen for me]," said Cain.

One of the generous donors who made the SUV possible for Jeff Cain today said, "Central gardens is not just a neighborhood; it's a way of life."
