MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The mother of the teen who accidentally shot himself in the head in has been arrested in connection to the investigation.

The police affidavit states that right after the 15-year-old shot himself, his mother, 41-year-old Cassandra Campbell, confessed to taking the weapon and hiding it so her son wouldn't get in trouble.

Memphis police say the teen was sitting in a car with the handgun before school last Friday when it accidentally went off, hitting him in the head.

The shooting happened around 6:45 a.m. on the 2500 block of Jenwood Street, near Covington Pike and Raleigh Lagrange Road.

A family member rushed the teen to the hospital and his injury was not life-threatening.

Following that shooting, according to the police affidavit, the teen's mother took the gun and hid it in her sock drawer so her son wouldn't be charged.

She also told investigators she is a convicted felon, who served a suspended sentence and probation for an aggravated assault charge in 2008. As a convicted felon, Campbell is not allowed to have a handgun.

Campbell is out of jail on a $8,500 bond and will be in court on Tuesday.
