(WMC-TV) - Investigators are looking into whether the smash and grab at the Wolfchase Mall over the weekend was an isolated event or if it was in connection to robberies from other parts of the country.

Nothing has changed at Reeds Jewelers inside Wolfchase mall since Sunday. Doors are still closed. Employees are still taking inventory. Vacuums are still sucking up broken glass.

Memphis police say no one was hurt, no one was robbed, and no guns were fired. But investigators say either five or six men destroyed the glass display case full of Rolex watches.

The robbers snatched 65 watches worth a total of $715,000.

The scene is similar to one at a mall in Atlanta where five guys smashed, grabbed, and ran from a jewelry store. Atlanta authorities say one of the suspects is dead and several of the others involved have been arrested. The department emailed Action News 5 the following information:

"It is doubtful that it is the same crew, but it is possible that it could be some of the extended members of the same group. We are contacting authorities in Tennessee to compare notes."

Saturday's incident is also similar to an incident from Houston with three suspects.

Action News 5 uncovered relatively recent cases just like Saturday's robbery from Arlington, Virginia; Melbourne, Florida; and San Jose, California. Each could be an isolated and random crime of opportunity, but they also could be connected.

Memphis police say they are still investigating, but nothing is ruled out.

If what happened at Wolfchase turns out to be part of a larger multi-state theft ring, federal investigators say they could launch their own case.

MPD hopes to release surveillance footage of the incident from Wolfchase soon.
