(WMC-TV) - Officers found an unloaded gun on a student in a Shelby County school Thursday morning.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office Detectives were called to Wooddale High School regarding a gun on campus. School resource officers received a tip that a student had a gun in his possession.

Cainen Gray, 19, surrendered his unloaded .22 caliber revolver after administrators and officers pulled him out of class.

He told officers he found the gun in a pile of leaves on the way to school and decided to keep it for protection because he was recently beat up.

Wooddale High School Principal Michael Kyle wrote the following in a letter to parents:

The safety of our students and campus is among our highest priorities. Be assured that our school officers and staff are trained to handle emergency situations. Additionally, we will continue reinforcing all messages around student safety in our school.

No one was injured.

He was then arrested for possession of a weapon on school property.

According to an Action News 5 database, this is the eighth gun found on a Shelby County School District campus so far this school year.
