(WMC-TV) - A 12-day search came to a close Thursday night when a fugitive task force captured the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's most wanted suspect.

Stephen Melton lived in subzero temperatures and avoided large-scale manhunts and helicopters, according to the U.S. Marshals Office.

A bundle of supplies containing extra clothing and bedding was found in a thicket near where Melton was believed to be hiding Thursday.

Task force members continued the search after dusk Thursday because they though Melton would not brave the frigid temperatures without staying the night indoors.

Investigators received a tip that he had taken shelter in a house on Melrose Road in Covington. Melton was located at that house and taken into custody. He had shaved his beard and colored his hair as part of his efforts to escape an arrest.

Deputies initially arrested Melton on January 11 at his home in Lauderdale County. He was wanted for escape, promotion of methamphetamine, and weapons charges.

As deputies searched his house, he sat in the deputy's SUV and then reportedly stole it after he kicked an 11-inch hole through the Plexiglass. Investigators found the SUV that day, but Melton ran.
