SAULSBURY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A Whiteville, Tenn. police officer was killed in a car crash Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Van Buren Road and West Fork Road in Hardeman County.

According to Whiteville Police Chief Steve Stanley, the officer is identified as Eddie Hamer, who has been on the police force full time for about one year and was a reserve officer since 2005.

Hamer was killed while on duty as an animal control officer.

"Officer Hamer has spent countless hours serving and protecting this community as well as volunteering with the Whiteville Elementary School," said Chief Stanley. "Our deepest sympathies go out to Officer Hamer's family."
