(WMC-TV) - The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to be on the look out for a specific charge on his or her credit or debit card statement.

A small charge on a credit card statement could be a gateway for hackers ready to take control of that credit card. The BBB says the bad guys could be testing to see if a credit or debit card is valid.

"Look at charges high and low something you don't recognize. It's okay to question it," said John O'Hara with the BBB.

If you see a charge of $9.84 there is a good chance you are a victim of fraud, according to the Better Business Bureau. In fact this small charge hit millions of people already affected by the Target security breach.

Many times the charge will say "customer support" making it appear innocent, but it is not. If you find a charge of $9.84 that you know nothing about then take action right away.

"The thing is if you do question the charge, and you find out it's not legitimate, you really want to contact your financial institution and you want to get a new credit card and debit card," said O'Hara.

The BBB insists you should check your credit card statement every month and report any suspicious charges.
