HARDEMAN COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Whiteville, Tenn. community is mourning the loss of Officer Eddie Hamer, a Whiteville police officer who was killed in a car crash Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Van Buren Road and West Fork Road in Hardeman County.

Hamer had been on the police force full time for about one year and was a reserve officer since 2005.

He also worked as a part-time animal control officer for the Hardeman County Sheriff's office. He was killed while on duty as an animal control officer.

"Officer Hamer has spent countless hours serving and protecting this community as well as volunteering with the Whiteville Elementary School," said Stanley. "Our deepest sympathies go out to Officer Hamer's family."

Eddie Hamer's mother says her only son was one of a kind.

"He always wanted to make a difference giving of himself," said Rosa Hamer.

A memorial sits at the crash site.

"Eddie worked around the clock trying to do and provide service throughout the community. That's one thing he loved to do," said Hamer's sister, Lora Jenkins.

Hamer also spent countless hours volunteering at Whiteville Elementary. His mother says the 36-year-old began working in the 11 grade and did not stop.

She says her son's goal in life was to be a role model and mentor.

"Sometimes we get a long life, sometimes we don't. It's what you do with what time you have," adds Rosa.

If you would like to help officer Hamer's family, you can donate to the Rosa Hamer/Eddie Hamer fund at any First South Bank location.

Funeral services for Officer Hamer will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1 at the Dixie Funeral Home in Bolivar.
