Man sentenced for rape more than decade after assault

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A man convicted of rape more than a decade after the assault was sentenced to 25 years in prison, which was the maximum sentence possible, according to Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich.

Jerald Jefferson, 32, was convicted in December of aggravated rape.

The victim, who was 16 years old at the time of the rape, was kidnapped from Trezevant High School by three people in October 2002. She was driven around the city, then raped.

It took two years for the rape kit to get tested, but when it finally was, the results did not provide a DNA match to anyone in the system. No results, that is, until Jerald Jefferson was arrested for an unrelated aggravated assault.

A grant received by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation allowed the victim's rape kit to be tested. That test led to results and justice for the victim, who is now 27 years old, more than a decade after her rape.
