Company steps up, but more help needed for family with broken pipe

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - It had all the makings of a happy ending. A tire company's manager saw a story on Action News 5 and set out to help a family with broken pipes. But the kind gesture hit a snag.

The first thing you see when you stop by Kay Story's home are gallons of water spewing from an icy pipe that burst in her backyard more than two weeks ago.

Kay lives in the home with her kids and ailing grandmother.

The broken pipe created an icy mess during some of the coldest days of the year.

The folks from Gateway Tire and Battery saw Kay's story on Action News 5 and knew that they could help.

"I knew that Gateway had the resources to come and help this lady this morning and brought our maintenance man here, he can fix just about anything," said Lynn Freeman, Gateway Tire and Battery.

"Yes, I'm very happy because the pipe is gonna get fixed," said Kay.

But Kay's happiness turned to worry when volunteers realized while they can fix the leaky pipe, more help will be needed before the family can live in the house comfortably.

"She does need more help," said Freeman. "She doesn't have any heat in the house. I understand there are some issues with the gas service here, it's going to require a plumber, which we're not qualified to do."

Kay says her family does not have the money to make the repairs. Her grandmother, who suffers from congestive heart problems, inherited the house from her parents. Her only income is social security.

The folks who stepped up to help Kay and her family Thursday are now asking for others to do the same.

"We'd like to see someone try to reach out and give them a hand after we get this water situation resolved," said Freeman.
