Program hopes to help families behind on utility bills stay warm

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Winter weather is predicted to hit the Mid-South in the next few days. That prediction means many people will be preparing for cold temps and possible snow.

But what about people who have already had their utilities shut off because of late bills?

A voluntary program sponsored by Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) and Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) can help with the problem.

"Share the Pennies" encourages MLGW customers to round their utility bill to the next highest dollar amount in order to help others in need of assistance.

Friday on Action News 5 at 6:00 pm, Lauren Squires talks with customers about paying the bills, many of which are the rise.  She will also explain how "Share the Pennies" works and who it will help.
