HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Utilities says customers' bills are running around 40% higher than December because of the unusually cold temperatures. The possibility of more cold temperatures in February has not been ruled out.

Workers at Lewter's Hardware said they have seen a rush of people over the last month trying to purchase quick fixes to keep the power bill low. The key word is "insulation" – hardware store employees said wall outlet insulators will help keep the cold air out and your warm inside. They only cost a few dollars.

If you have air vents, make sure you use a cover on them that allows them to close. Lewter's employees said that will allow you to manually control the heating or cooling to a specific part of your house or apartment. According to the experts, programmable thermostats are a great tool but they do not recommend them to a lot of consumers for one reason.

"They need to be installed by a professional. They are not just easily slapped up there. You really weld that with a heating or air conditioning person. It's low voltage; you do need someone who knows what they're doing to put one in," said Don Lewter.

Lewter said that since the New Year, customers are coming in droves for everything from ice melt to plumbing supplies to fix, plug, or heat their homes. "We have sold insulation, heathers – we've sold out of heaters and gotten another shipment in and sold out of them," he said.

The store expects one annual winter rush, but this year what started as a "good month" has only gotten better after three consecutive cold snaps and nights of single digits and snow. Lewter said the store isn't immune from its own winter setbacks.

"We had a truck coming in and he was on the other side of Atlanta and he couldn't get here," Lewter said.

The store's employees are prepared for more winter weather in case it comes our way again. In fact, they have sleds for sale just in case there is another round of it before Spring.
