Mayor Wharton invites Memphis out to lunch

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton invited the entire city out to lunch Friday as part of a push to get locals out on Beale Street.

Now that the city of Memphis owns Beale Street they started a new campaign to remind locals that the historic street has more to offer than late night entertainment.

The City of Memphis and the Downtown Memphis Commission hosted a parade Friday morning followed by the mayor inviting the city to lunch.

"The restaurants are open during the day on Beale Street," said Wharton.

Wharton, along with the city, encourages locals to rediscover the number one tourist attraction in the state and the street voted most iconic in a USA Today Poll.

But while the mayor extended the lunch invitation, he did not pick up the tab.

The city also took time to honor John Elkington, the outgoing manager of Beale, Friday. His business, Performa Entertainment, helped revitalize this historic street for more than 30 years.
