MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A restaurant hostess just arriving to work escaped a would-be kidnapper who had been planning his attack for six months, Memphis police say.

Jonathan William Cox is charged with attempted aggravated kidnapping.

Cox works at the Olive Garden located at 7778 Winchester Road. Police say he sat in his car Sunday morning waiting on the teenaged hostess to arrive at work.

When she tried to get into the building, police say he "came up behind her, places his hand around her mouth to prevent her from screaming and tried to drag her to his vehicle." The hostess was able to break free, run across the street, and call her mother.

When police arrived on scene, they found Cox still sitting in his car in the parking lot. According to an affidavit of complaint, Cox told investigators he was going to kidnap the victim, take her to his house to have sex with her, and that he had brought duct tape and rope with him in order to carry out his plan. Police say he told them he'd been planning his crime for the past six months.

Cox is in jail on $100,000 bond. He made his initial appearance in court Monday morning and is due back in court on February 11.
