MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The weather outside has been frightful this winter but perhaps even less delightful at the nation's airports, where storm systems forced the cancellation of sometimes thousands of flights in a single day.

The snow, sleet, ice, and freezing cold can lead to frustrated travelers trying to get from point A to point B. And don't forget about the frazzled employees, who are trying to help.

But there are things travelers can do to help themselves and perhaps stay ahead of the pack.

Before heading to the airport to wait it out with the weather-stranded masses, check to see if airlines are offering waivers for change fees, and rebook a flight for free. You are better off doing this as soon as the weather starts to look dicey, so you can grab a seat on a flight that will depart sooner rather than later.

If you are already at the airport, work multiple channels, including an airline's mobile app, Twitter feed, and phone lines. It may be worth it to spend the money for a one-day wireless Internet pass to an airport lounge, both for your own comfort and for better access to customer service reps.

Lastly, travel with a battery pack for your smart phone so you are not fighting for outlet access.

Remember, the best travelers are those who think and prepare. It is already February, so spring and summer's sunnier skies are not too far off.
