TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Southwest Tennessee Electric says it juggled anywhere from 500 to 700 power outages in Tipton County Thursday. That number is down from 12,000 earlier in the week.

The problem, they say, is icy trees and branches falling to the ground, taking the power lines with them.

Crews have been working tirelessly day and night to get the power back on.

Norma Kirby is glad she can finally turn the lights on in her house.

"We haven't had power since Tuesday afternoon and it's just been cold," she said. "We have gas heat but it only helps so much."

Kirby says all the food in her refrigerator is ruined because of the power outage. She and her husband ate dinner Wednesday by a coal oil lamp.

They have been staying warm using their gas fireplace.

Power crews were a welcome sight to Kirby and others along Mt. Carmel Road.

"They've been working long hours, some said they've been up since six yesterday afternoon," Kirby added.

Southwest Tennessee Electric had crews lining the roads, cutting icy branches away from power lines.

Their goal is to have power restored in Tipton County by Thursday night.

"The only people that might not be on is people with damage to their homes where their meter base has been pulled away from their house and they have to have an electrician to fix that," said Phillip Mullins, Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation.

Mullins says electric crews have been working up to 40 hours straight.

But, he says residents may not be out of the woods yet.

"We still have ice on the trees, on the wires, so until that melts there's dangers of them falling and causing additional damage," he said.
