MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Friday, February 6 is National Wear Red Day. It's a day set aside to recognize heart health for women and children.

In recognition of this day newborn babies at Baptist Women's Hospital in East Memphis are being adorned with red hats.

Baptist has partnered with the American Heart Association to purchase these hats, as well as a gift basket, including CPR kit, to be given to a mom who's recently given birth.

There are 36,000 babies in the United States born with a heart defect every year. Some are mild with no symptoms. But, at least nine of every 1,000 infants born have a serious defect.

On Action News 5 at 5 p.m., hear how Baptist Women's hospital is recognizing this special day and also hear how they're prepared to deal with newborns with a heart defect.

Action News 5's Justin Hanson will also tell you about the hospital's simple procedure to test for heart problems at birth. A mom with a son in the NICU talks about how she's reassured thanks to Baptist's quick response.
