MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Several companies have layoffs in the past few months, leaving people of all experience levels suddenly looking for work. But the jobs are not necessarily out there, which means the unemployed are having to work harder to get their resumes noticed.

Kevin Cochran has 25 years of experience in Information Technology (IT). But an unexpected layoff forced Cochran on the job hunt.

"It's just kind of finding that right match to take advantage of the skills," he said.

They are skills that he will now be showcasing uniquely thanks to coaching from Angela Copeland, who helps unemployed people fine tune their resumes, build up their skill set, as well as find them jobs that best suits those skills.

"It's really a very emotion process for folks," she said. "The first thing that we really work on is their elevator pitch and being able to come up with the message about what you're looking for now and kind of creating a person brand around that."

Copeland recommends taking a look at your resume and LinkedIn profile. Update your information and make sure it tells your story and connects you.

"Next, they work on ordering business cards and starting to get out there and start networking as soon as possible," explained Copeland.

In Cochran's case, he is looking to use his project and people management skills to showcase his IT experience.

As a father of four kids, Cochran says hearing the news of his layoff and telling his family may have been the most difficult part. What happens next, though, is up to him.

"I need to try to harness all of that energy, some of it's anger, some of it's hurt, some of it's shock, it's kind of all of the above, panic and all those emotions and channel all that into productive efforts," he said.

Copeland says another way to build up your resume and showcase your skills is to volunteer.
