MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A local ice hockey club president, who has played the game in Sochi, Russia, is following a few Mid-Southerners as they compete in the 2014 Olympic Games.

Kelly Whelan, who speaks fluent Russian, is cheering on Team USA with her Rhodes college teammates. Having spent time playing hockey in Russia, Whelan is excited the games are being played there.

"It's such a thrill, not just from the sports perspective, but also from Russia in general, to share what it has to offer on the main stage for the first time," she said.

Whalen is now trying to immerse her fellow Rhodes College students in the sport.

"It's a hard experience," she said. "You're playing several games a day. You're already stressed out on the national stage, representing your country," added Whelan. "While it's a thrill, it makes you nervous."
