Enough funds raised to buy 8 bulletproof vests for K-9s

TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - K-9 officers from across West Tennessee are now outfitted with bulletproof vests thanks to the generosity of a Munford woman who raised thousands of dollars for the cause.

"The project began when I found out that six of the K-9s in Tipton County did not have bulletproof vests," said Pansy Bradley, who organized the fundraiser. "I felt that these vests would help protect this working group of K-9s with the dangerous jobs they face while serving in our community."

The fundraiser got a tremendous response from residents across Tipton County and West Tennessee.

"It's a great relief to us handlers to know we've added some layer of protection for our dogs," said Tipton County deputy Chris Payne.

Deputy Payne's K-9, Kira, and seven others from Munford, Covington, Tipton County, and Fayette County, now have protective vests.

"It is obvious that the deputies and officers love their K-9s and want to help with their safety and that is where I come in, because every deputy/officer needs, deserves a vest, both two and four-legged," Bradley said.

"We count our K-9s as an officer. So, it's just another way to protect them. They do great work for us," said Covington Police Chief Buddy Lewis.

Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley agreed that the new protective vests will add another layer of safety to the K-9 teams.

"Our K9 officers do some of the most dangerous jobs we have to deal with. A lot of times we will deploy our K-9s in situations that are really tough," said Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley.

In all, Bradley raised more than $6,000 online and with local support. That is enough money to buy three more vests for K9 officers in Oakland and Millington.
