(WMC-TV) - The Quitman County Grand Jury indicted a man for the murder of Claksdale, Miss. mayoral candidate Marco MacMillian.

A trial date has not been set for Lawrence Reed, who was driving McMillian's vehicle when it collided with another vehicle last year. Crews airlifted Reed to the hospital, and at some point authorities received information that McMillian may have been in danger.

"Based on the evidence through the course of the investigation, it appears the crime of murder took place in Quitman County," said district attorney Brenda Mitchell.

McMillian's body was later found in Coahoma County.

According to the medical examiner, McMillian died of asphyxiation. Evidence shows the openly gay mayoral candidate was burned and beaten.

Although, the toxicology report shows levels of alcohol and marijuana in McMillian's system, the medical examiner said they did not contribute to his death.
