MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Grizzlies forward James Johnson has quickly become a fan favorite. The team plans to honor him by letting fans mimic his neck tattoo by giving out fake tattoos before the game on Friday.

It's a slam dunk for some.

"I think it's all in fun. It's temporary, so it can come off," said one Johnson fan.

It's not even a temporary tattoo, technically, but a sticker. Still, some fans frown on it.

"It sends the wrong message, and the kids may get a real tattoo," said another fan.

Grizzlies Chief Operating Officer Jason Wexler considers it celebratory in recognition of Johnson's contributions to his new team and the story behind his tattoo.

"The tattoo is his son's name, Naymin, and James sees that as a transformational moment in his life and his son overcoming some health issues," noted Wexler.

Obviously, Wexler says participation in the promotion is not mandatory.

"It's certainly one of those things where you don't gave to wear the sticker if you don't want to wear the sticker - there's no pressure whatsoever," he said.
