AN5 investigates 'big boom' heard throughout W. Tenn.

TIPTON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - What was that boom? That is the question hundreds of Tipton and Fayette County residents are asking this week.

The question and commentaries have been all over social media networks.

It just sounded like a low boom," said Jeff Yarbrough.

Others have said it sounded like military cannons, a car accident, or a stick of dynamite exploded. Whatever it was, they all heard it at the same time on both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Some even say their houses shook.

Julie Hartsfield says she heard the sound, but her father-in-law felt it.

"He lives across the street. He said his windows rattled," she explained.

Roger Ralph, who lives in Covington, says the mysterious sound could have Biblical meaning.

"We just better live right because the Lord may be back tomorrow," he said.

Tipton County EMA Director Tommy Dunavant says he has been inundated with calls about the noise. He think it was more than likely the result of the recent temperature swing.

It is called a cryoseism, or ice quake.

"Moisture in the ground freezes and it thaws back out," explained Dunavant. "Then you create moisture again, the temps fall again and it freezes and you start hearing popping and explosions."

So, keep your ears open and you may just hear it too, at least until the ground warms up.
