AN5 takes tour of Pyramid ahead of Bass Pro's grand opening

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis City Council members got the chance to tour the Memphis Pyramid Friday to check on the progress of Bass Pro Shops' renovation.

Action News 5's Kontji Anthony had the opportunity to join the tour and get the first look inside since Bass Pro Shops began construction on the upcoming tourist destination.

The old arena has been gutted and the framework for the outdoor-themed retail destination can be seen.

"I think it's going to be one of the biggest attractions in the City of Memphis," said Bill Dance, NBC's "Bill Dance Outdoors" host.

The excavation for the lakes, ponds, swamps, and rivers is underay.

"There's hunting, fishing, marine boating," explained Bass Pro Shops Architect Tom Jowett. "Boats will actually be in the water, waterfalls, a large aquarium, water features that you can feed fish, love ducks."

In addition to all of the water features, there will even be a pistol range, an archery range, and bowling alleys.

The third floor and part of the second floor will be hotel rooms, according to Jowett. And how visitors reach the rooms will even be an experience.

"There are two elevators," said Jowett. "They'll have a glass face and that will go to the top of the Pyramid, which has never been occupied."

He added, "We'll have themed swamp-type rooms, themed duck rooms, we'll have duck cabins and then above that is the Catfish House seafood restaurant, which will have a large aquarium and two new glass balconies that will overlook the south and west face of the Pyramid and the space will be opened up to be all glass."

NBC's Bill Dance says Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid will be a place where people can bring their whole family and stay there for most of the day.

Bass Pro is scheduled to open in December. It will create 500 permanent jobs.
