New Muhlenberg Co. sirens ready in case of severe weather

Posted: Updated:
MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -

Severe weather could hit Western Kentucky on Thursday, putting three new weather sirens to the test.

The sirens are scattered throughout Muhlenberg County and strategically placed near schools.

Each covers a four-and-a-half mile radius.

Greenville Fire Chief Jerry Aders says the sirens will sound for one minute if there's a  thunderstorm warning or a tornado watch. They will sound for three minutes if there is a tornado warning.

"Really, if you hear the siren you need to go in, check your news channel and listen to your weather alert to see what's going on," says Aders.

Aders says the new sirens are meant to warn people who may be outside, not serve as the only warning.

He says the best thing is to know where your safe spots are now, and not when storms are threatening.

"The best place in a single family dwelling is at the lowest level, the basement if possible, a bathroom or get under something heavy. The best thing to do is to stay in until you know its all clear," says Aders.

The sirens are also tested twice a week - a silent test on Wednesday and an audible test on Saturday - just to make sure they are ready if they're needed.
