OLIVE BRANCH, MS -

(WMC-TV) - The stepmother of a 2-year-old boy is charged with capital murder in connection with his death.

The little boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital January 22, where he died. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.

Olive Branch Police Department arrested his stepmother, Patricia Gale Redman, 28, and charged her with capital murder. She is in custody without bond.

"It was, if not the worst, one of the worst I've seen in all my years of being in law enforcement," said Olive Branch police chief Don Gammage. "We're talking about a 2-year-old boy that's pretty much defenseless. He's helpless."

After the 2-year-old had to be taken off life support in January, Olive Branch Police have been in the middle of a gruesome month long investigation into how he died.

Redman is due in court Tuesday. Her attorney, Martin Zummach, released the following statement

John Keith Perry and I have been retained to represent Mrs. Redman.

We will have no comment other than this is obviously a tragic death of a two year old child that she deeply loved and cared for and that tragedy was not at her hands. We have our own investigation that we will be prepared to present at the appropriate time which we firmly believe will shed light on the underlying facts and exonerate her.

We hope that the court process is permitted to progress for Mrs. Redman in the same way that we know the members of the public would want for themselves or their loved ones.

In our opinion, a rush to judgment without knowing the facts or the undisclosed strategies, intentions, and motives of others is unfair to the process of justice.

We believe in the fairness of the justice system.

We look forward to putting forth an aggressive defense of Mrs. Redman.
