NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Tennessee State University football player is recovering after being shot Thursday afternoon in a busy west Nashville shopping center parking lot.

Cameron Carter, a freshman kicker for the Tigers, was shot while driving off Charlotte Pike near the Walmart.

"This is an all-purpose shopping center where people come for everything," said shopper Dennis Butler.

It all apparently started over a common occurrence on the road: a dispute over who had the right-of-way at a four-way intersection.

Carter told police he pulled up to the intersection at about the same time as the other driver.

"A small amount of road rage transpired over who gets to go first," said Metro police Lt. Douglas Bell.

Carter said the other driver tried to block the intersection, and when Carter tried to pass the other car by driving over a sidewalk, the driver pulled out a gun and shot multiple times at Carter's car.

Carter was hit in the left shoulder and sustained head injuries from broken glass.

"He was able to drive away to another location and notify police," Bell said.

Carter was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and later released to recover at home.

The alleged gunman is still on the loose. He is described as a black male driving a black Nissan Altima with black rims.

"It's definitely going to make me think twice about saying anything to anybody now if I get in some sort of traffic mishap," Butler said. "You just don't know what may set somebody off."

If you have information that could help investigators, call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
