A look ahead: Lights out on I-240 - Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Lights out along I-240 concerns drivers

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Lights out along Interstate 240 has left hundreds of nighttime drivers in the dark.

Overhead lights that brighten interchanges at Poplar Avenue and Walnut Grove are off as well as the light-poles that line the interstate between them.

Constance Williams drives the stretch daily and noticed the lights atop the flyover are not on either. She says her headlights are not enough.

"I commute with my children, and I can't see anything," she said.

Another viewer who makes the daily commute alerted Action News 5 to the issue via email writing, in part, "Somebody in charge that is overseeing the operation needs to have this brought to his/her attention before a pileup of trucks and cars takes place and worse yet, someone is killed or severely injured because of the poor lighting."

A massive multi-year construction project is underway in the area, which will expand the flyover and add lanes to the interstate.

MLGW says the power was cut at the Tennessee Department of Transportation's request.

Drivers just hope the lights come back on as soon as possible.

"They just brighten up everything so you can see more of the guards and more of the orange cones," said driver Emily Boswell.

Both TDOT and MLGW encourage drivers to take their time and always use caution in construction zones.
