Shelby Co. elections to watch

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC - TV) - Two Shelby County elections are shaping up to be the ones to watch this year.

Judge Joe Brown worked for ratings on his nationally syndicated TV show.  Now, the former criminal court judge wants the district attorney's job back home in Shelby County.

"This office belongs to the people of this county, and it's not a racial thing," said Judge Joe Brown.  "The people of this county deserve something other than what I term country club justice."

Incumbent Amy Weirich said, "I don't really talk about the individual; I knew I would have an opponent."  She has no opposition in the Republican primary.  "I believe my record speaks for itself as a career prosecutor and the work we've done since I became D.A."

Incumbent Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell is also a shoe-in for the Republican primary.

But four candidates hope to win the Democratic primary.  They include: former county commissioner Deidra Malone, current commissioner James Harvey, and Steve Mulroy.  Former school board member Kenneth Whalum Junior is also seeking the democratic nomination.

Shelby County Democratic Party Chairman Bryan Carson says there is some competition.

"I look at all the candidates; they're all viable, formidable candidates," said Carson.

He doesn't endorse in the primaries, but he added that consensus candidates have emerged in previous elections, "I believe that unified, we're stronger and divided we're essentially weak."

Republicans won every county wide race during the last election.
