Commissioners passes resolution to re-evaluate proposed school closings

MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Thousands of students may be rezoned and the battle to spare Westhaven Elementary School includes supporters overwhelming the county commission.

"I want my grandkids to say my grandmother stood up for me," said Bridget Bradley.

Bradley is a grandparent and president of Westhaven Elementary school's parent teacher organization. The school is one of 13 on the chopping block in Shelby County, but it is not going down without a fight from the community.

"We want to keep our kids together we want to keep our staff together we want to keep our school together. We have 15.4 acres, there's no need to break up our schools build us a new school behind it," added Bradley.

Shelby County commissioners voted unanimously to pass Justin Ford's resolution urging Shelby county schools to re-evaluate closing the school that is home to more than 500 students, several of them have special needs.

"By the time they graduate from this school those children are at a level above or better than children and counterparts of their own," noted Bradley.

Monday's resolution was passed just before the school board considers school closures Tuesday.

"We got a battle [Tuesday] night and I'm just standing on faith that everything is going to come out just like we need it," said Bradley.
